In the late 1950’s by San Francisco newspaper columnist Herb Caen contracted form of russian suffix -nik in the wake of Sputnik. Associated with beat in its slang beat meaning it names the condition of being beaten down, poor, exhausted, at the bottom of the world. Writers Ginsberg and Kerouac from Beat generation in 1958 connected it with beatitude.

Young people which stressed artistic self-expression and the rejection of the mores of conventional society, implied a connection with the communist movement, other than the antipathy both philosophies shared towards capitalism.
