Conatus is a term used to refer to an innate inclination of a thing to continue to exist and enhance itself. “Unaquaeque res, quantum in se est, in suo esse perseverare conatur.” Each thing insofar as it is in itself, endeavours to persevere in its being. The conatus refer to the instinctual “will to live”. In Spinoza’s world-view, this principle is applicable to all things, and furthermore constitutes the very essence of objects, including the human mind and morals. Spinoza also uses the term conatus to refer to rudimentary concepts of inertia, conatus recendendi, or “tendency away from the center”, represents the centrifugal forces.
